The Chevron Notch (VB) method is used to determine fracture toughness. Specimens with notch configurations A and D as shown in ASTM C1421 will be tested according to the protocols in C1421. C1421 recommends testing a minimum of five specimens to obtain a mean value.
The Surface Crack in Flexure (SC) method is used to determine fracture toughness. A surface crack is generated as shown in ASTM C1421. The specimen is then tested according to the protocols in C1421. C1421 recommends testing a minimum of five specimens to obtain a mean value.
Note: The single edge precracked beam (SEPB) method is also listed in ASTM C1421 as an acceptable fracture toughness method. If you are interested in determining fracture toughness using this technique, please note this on the REQUEST A QUOTE form.
